Stage lighting

(Light Designer and Light Manager)

This course is designed for lighting designers and stage lighting managers, who will acquire the total amount of concepts and knowledge needed to achieve full and cost-effective provision of complete lighting equipment for the overall realization of a theater, concert or television production. The course introduces designers to the theory of light, the principles of light sources, the characteristics of different light sources and the types of lighting fixtures used in professional theater or concert stages and their characteristics. It provides knowledge on how to plan and choose, to program lighting fixtures to perform future creative tasks.

Course objective:

 to acquaint the designers with the general professional equipment and technology of theatrical, concert or television production and its technical provision;

to form the ability to work with lighting in the implementation of their own scene practical work;

to form skills in designers for analysis of the means of expression of lighting solutions;

to form abilities for analysis and evaluation of the design of stage lighting in theatrical, concert or television productions and programs.

Teaching methods:

 During the course the basics of optics and the theory of light are studied along with the basic principles of lighting devices. The second part also introduces the creative application of artificial lighting in solving creative tasks of creating a stage work - an attempt is made to bring the work of the designers as close as possible to the specifics of working with light in a theater, concert hall and television setting, and to achieve professional artistic solutions.

The training is done alone, with the use of photos, drawings and videos aimed at practical mastery of lighting fixtures, and later tasks are given as a test, and then a full analysis and work plan are made regarding work with artistic lighting.

Prerequisites:

 The theoretical course begins on the basis of knowledge in physics from the classes of high-schools. More in-depth research is related to materials in the following disciplines: stage design and television directing, scenography, fine arts, basics of light and television composition and artistic solutions.

Thematic distribution of the study content:

 Objectives: The aim is for future lighting designers and managers to acquire the amount of knowledge and practical skills necessary to achieve the tasks for the practical implementation of artistic productions through artificial lighting.

Expected results: The designer/manager to be able to make his own lighting designs for future projects with staging activities. Realizing these practical tasks, he will master the acquired theoretical knowledge.

The first lesson is for beginner lighting designers. It highlights five main aspects of stage lighting and offers designers ways to improve it.

The lesson answers the question of where the light should fall on the stage, talks about different angles of lighting and offers several useful exercises for constructing light images.

Most of the upcoming practical exercises will require multiple light sources in order to build a light scene step by step.

Use of color in the artistic interpretation of the scene.

How to use light to convey the character of the drama scene and emphasize the emotions of the actors

The process of creating light scenes can be compared to drawing a map. The lighting designer must trace the path from one scene to the next throughout the play.

Bringing together all stages from the preparation to the actual performance.

Tutorials with practical demostrations and explanations of the Category Light.
